THE Cat Crawl
A circular walk (pub crawl)
from Leazes Park Newcastle – approx 7 miles
In Aid of St Oswald’s Hospice in memory of Alex Dryden
It costs £15 to join the crawl and for that you get a T-Shirt, cup cake with tea or coffee at the start, a pint of real ale and home cooked buffet back at The Tower Cafe. Plus, the sense of achievement from a lovely walk and the pride from knowing that you’ve done your bit for this very worthwhile cause. £10 of the entry will go direct to St Oswald’s with only the cost of your T-Shirt deducted.
This is not a race; it’s a pleasant amble with nice stopping off points. The aim is to have fun and raise funds!
Estimated Itinerary
10:30 Meet at The Tower Café in Leazes Park (just off Richardson Road) Newcastle for cuppas and cup-cakes. We will have free basic tea and coffee but The Tower Café will be pleased to sell speciality coffees if you would prefer.
11:15 Leave the cafe and take a roundabout route through Leazes Park, across the moor to Spital Tongues, over the motorway footbridge then across the Town Moor to Wylam Brewery – 1.5 Miles
12:00 Arrive at Wylam Brewery for much needed refreshments.
12:30 Leave Wylam Brewery and head north up the Town Moor. Cross the Great North Road at Forsyth Road then head along Highbury to Jesmond Dene Road. Cross over and either go along Ilford Road or
turn right to go down Matthew Bank, both leading to South Gosforth and The Brandling Villa. – 2 Miles
13:15 Arrive Brandling Villa and a warm welcome from Dave and his staff along with refreshments from the bar.
13:45 Leave Brandling Villa, we’ll now walk through Jesmond Dene so we can either cross the road and head up to Freeman Road with an entrance to the Dene from opposite Lilburn Gardens or stay on Haddricks Mill Road go past the Millstone and enter the dene from Castle Farm Road. Then take any route you fancy, walking up through Jesmond Dene towards Pet’s Corner and Armstrong Bridge. Once under Armstrong Bridge turn right on Benton Bank to Jesmond Road and follow on to The Punch Bowl – 2 Miles
14:30 Arrive Punch Bowl a further warm welcome and cold beer (or whatever you fancy) from the bar.
15:00 Leave The Punch Bowl for a short hop along Jesmond Road towards Newcastle to The Carriage. There is a walkway to the left just before the motorway starts – 1⁄2 mile
15:15 Arrive at The Carriage where Lee and Dom are expecting us and will be helping us with fundraising
16:00 Leave The Carriage up to Sandyford Road past The Hancock, the Civic Centre and the RVI and back to The Tower Cafe – 1 Mile
16:30 Back outside The Tower Cafe for a pint of ale, food, raffles, fun and cupcakes! Again Stephano and his staff would welcome our custom for coffees or hot food.
Anyone who wants to continue festivities can join us back at Mean-Eyed Cat on St Thomas Street for the rest of the evening.
Despite the name of the walk, Dogs (on leads) are very welcome with well behaved owners
